Today marks two weeks since Benny's surgery, but it hasn't been without adventure (seriously...does this family ever lack adventure?!). Today also marks one week since Benaiah split his new incision wide open. Let me tell you about that...
Last Tuesday was our 'MOPS day'. I get up early, get ready and diaper bags packed so that by 8:00 I can get the boys up and full before we leave the house. It is usually busy but totally manageable. Everything was going according to schedule on Tuesday. I already had Ben's shoes and coat on. I sat him on the floor while I went to put Jack's shoes and coat on. This is where everything started getting a little crazy. For some reason Benny was a bit sad about sitting by himself. He started whining a bit. Then, he tried to pull himself up on an end table that was sitting close, but somehow he lost his balance. During this entire time I was just trying to talk him through the couple of minutes I was being occupied with his brother so when he lost his balance and started screaming (he is naturally pretty dramatic) I just said "oh Benny...pull through it buddy, you are...". Then I looked up. Ugh. I then saw why he was screaming. What a 'terrible mom' moment.
It seems that as Ben pulled himself up he lost his balance and fell face-forward onto the leg of the table, thus splitting his not-even-a-week-old incision completely open. The blood was intense. I immediately stopped putting J's shoes on (leaving him with one on and one off) and scooped up Benny. I was frantic. What do I do?! Call 911? Call the hospital? Call Mark? I opted for the triage nurse from the hospital.
As I made the phone call, I told J that he needed to be very quiet and find something to do while I was on the phone. I told him that Benny's 'owie' broke and that I needed to talk to someone on how to fix it. He was concerned, but didn't really get it. After I talked to the nurse (who needed to talk to the doctor) I made a phone call to Mark to let him know what was going on. Mark said that I probably should just get into the car and start driving to the hospital (we are about 35 minutes away from the hospital ) so that is what I decided to do. Then I realized what was keeping Jack so quiet....he had found a bowl full of kix cereal on the counter and was (one-by-one) putting them on the floor to stomp on with the foot that had the one boot on! There were about 15 smashed kix on the kitchen floor! Not cool.
Once in the car and on the way to the hospital the nurse finally called me back. Her idea was to make an appt. for 1:30 because the clinic was pretty full that day. Seriously?! That would have been 4.5 hrs. I was not impressed. I said "really? You know that his lip is wide open and bleeding right? She said 'yes, could you just keep him still until his appointment?" HA! Was this woman serious? I couldn't believe what she was saying. Finally I mentioned that he is a 1-year old and that there was no way I would be 'keeping him still' and that we needed another option. She made a few more phone calls and got us in for an appt with the doctor immediately.
Long story short, the doctor decided that being Benny was already scheduled for another surgery in 6-8 weeks, it was best to just leave the incision for now and fix everything at the next surgery. He sent us home with gauze and a bunch of ointment and said that it would probably get worse before it got better.
Oh! And guess who is teething 3 teeth on top of all this?! Poor boy! He really is doing great considering everything.
This weekend we took the boys to "aMerita" (the Mall of America) to get out of the house. They really enjoyed it. Jackson is such a dare devil and his brother isn't far behind.
Benny also got his first hair cut. Mark and I decided that I need to learn how to cut hair....we are not impressed with how the front turned out, but hopefully once it grows a little we will be able to fix it. Can you believe how much older Ben looks now?! I also think he looks a lot more like his brother.
The boys received a video player for Christmas that can be used in the car. It also came with head phones and a house adapter so we have been using it in the house. Jackson loves it!

Love love love the picture of Ben getting his haircut-dumb and dumberish:) Just kidding! And I love Jackson enjoying his video...what a big boy! Love you guys!! Can't wait to see you SOON!
Bummer! I have a few that tend to be more dramatic than necessary about minor things. I can not tell you how many times I've poo-pooed their noise before looking! Ugh. I'm guessing since it's the end of Jan. he's had his second surgery? How did that go?
